Back in School
Buen Dia! It's been a few weeks since I posted something. I have spent the last two weeks at School. The first week we put the school back in order. Most things get taken out of the school and stored at peoples homes. It all has to come back and get cleaned and put in order. I do not have my own room, but I have a beautiful space to store things in the Kindergarten.
We did some work together as a staff and got the school ready for the children! I have had my challenges which have been basically all overcome, except for my car..... it's in the shop - the irony is not lost on me! Anyway, Monday arrived, the first day of school, and we got to welcome the children back! A detailed protocol is in place to keep everyone safe. I am in charge of hand washing in the newly built outdoor sink. I think I have a picture...
My first class was third grade and the kids were sweet and ready to learn. I am used to large classes and these are tiny as the kids come half days, 1,3 and 5 in the morning. 2 4 and 6/7 in the afternoon. We will do this until it is same to bring them all together.
It is difficult to teach in English, as they kids mostly speak Spanish. but they understand a lot and Handwork is visual, so I am getting through to most of them. And there is always one child who helps translate.
The heat and the humidity are challenging. I am worn out after the day. And the bug bites! I did see my first tarantula. Oh yes, I did! it was HUGE. bigger than my outstretched hand. I was working in the first grade as we were preparing the school, and Abraham came in and said 'you want to see a trantuala?' I did not want to, but I thought it better to see one on purpose than by mistake!! He captured it and released it to further out in the jungle. Yikes! He loves all creatures. He says when there is a snake most people run away and he runs towards it. So, I know who to call when i find one :-)
Here is a movie of the campus. Adios for now! I am off to Cozumel again. A friend from California is there. More snorkeling!
Wow! So many new things...and then the familiar...the routines and the teaching and your ability to share your love of the work with the little ones...enjoy it! And good luck with the environmental challenges...
